Manuka honey is a honey derived from bees in New Zealand and differs from regular honey because it has antibacterial properties from the active ingredient methylglyoxal. Manuka honey also has antiviral, anti- inflammatory, and antioxidant benefits. There has been evidence based research on many of the benefits.


Manuka honey is said to:


  • Aid in wound and burn healing

  • Heal diabetic ulcers

  • Can help prevent MRSA and other antibiotic resistant infections

  • Promote oral health

  • Soothe a sore throat

  • Help prevent gastric ulcers and fights against H. Pylori bacteria

  • Decrease symptoms of IBS

  • Treat Acne

  • Treat eczema

  • Improves immunity

  • Helps with SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth)


You may notice a UMF number located on your container of Manuka honey. This refers to the Unique Manuka Factor. This number describes the levels of MGO and a precursor, dihydroxyacetone.


The range for UMF scoring is as follows:


0 to 4: an undetectable amount is present

5 to 9: low levels are present

10 to 15: useful levels are present

16: superior, high-grade levels are present

A Kfactor number may also be present. It measures markers such as purity, live enzymes, over 250 chemical compounds, DHA, pollen count, pH levels, antioxidant levels and phenolic compounds.


The scale for Kfactor is as follows:


Very high antibacterial activity. Superior healing properties. (18-22)

High antibacterial activity. Good healing properties. (14-18)

Medium level activity. Suitable for maintaining good health. (8-14)

Low level activity. Comparable to normal honey. (0-8)


I like to add 1 TBSP. of Manuka into my tea in the morning but you can also spread it on toast or drizzle it over my oatmeal. You could even use it to sweeten your smoothie or just straight off the spoon.
